Infertility is defined as not being able to get pregnant (conceive) after one year (or longer) of unprotected sex.
There are 2 types of infertility:

1. Primary infertility - refers to couples who have not become pregnant after at least 1 year having sex without using birth control methods.
2. Secondary infertility - refers to couples who have been able to get pregnant at least once, but now are unable.

Causes

In females

Ovarian cysts and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Exercising too much
Hormone imbalances
Thyroid disease
Endometriosis
Being overweight or underweight

In males

Exposure to high heat for prolonged periods
Defects in the sperm
Decreased number of sperm
Infection
Obesity
Retrograde ejaculation
